Can and Have to or has to





                                                             





"Can" is an auxiliary verb which is often translated as "poder", and "have to" is a transitive verb phrase which is often translated as "tener que". 



CAN
1. (used to indicate ability)
to. can I can run five miles in an hour.


b. know
I can cook Italian food too.


2. (used to ask for permission)
to. can Can I go out with Jennifer on Friday night?


3. (used to indicate possibility)
to. can If you like, you can have the salad with the dressing on the side.


4. (with perception verbs)
to. no direct translation
I Can't tell if it's going to rain or

I couldn't see .
because of the brightness of that light.

HAVE TO AND HAS    TO
When we have to do something we use have to and we use it (generally) when it is a requirement imposed from the outside: I have to do my tax return! (I have to do my income statement!).
